GENP version 3

We are pleased to announce that GENP version 3 has been released.
GENP is a consumer orientated product which will also appeal to the serious
genealogist.
Existing abilities are - multi media, multiple databases, multiple users,
grouping of databases, multi lingual. Link your data from one database to
another. "Link don't merge" - keep your data separate.
Version 3 now supports Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
There are more than 40 major new features stacking up to be the most
significant release in GENP's history. There are more than 50 reports.

o Support for Vista.
Major changes have been made to the operation of the program so that it runs
on Windows XP and Vista.
o Portable drive operation.
The program can now be installed on a memory stick or USB drive. This means
you can run the program at a library or relatives house. There is a new
facility to easily point the program to the variable location of your databases.
o New GenBase Wizard.
This new feature allows for the straight forward setting up of a new database.
o New demo databases.
We have added 3 more demo databases to the trial. In addition to the demo
of the Keipert family we now have Hatchepsut, PalenquePacal and PalenqueChaacal.
The Hatchepsut GenBase details the family of the Egyptian female Pharaoh
Hatchepsut. The genealogy runs from Amenhotep II back to the Pharaoh Sekenenre
Tao I. This is for 7 generations. The period is from circa 1400 BC to circa
1588 BC.
The PalenquePacal GenBase details the dynasty at Palenque including Pacal the
Great. The genealogy runs for 10 generations. It includes 13 rulers. It is from
the founder Bahlum-Kuk I in the Early Classic period through Kan-Xul II of the
Late Classic period.
The PalenqueChaacal GenBase details the dynasty of Chaacal III at Palenque.
The genealogy runs for 3 generations. It is from the founder Chaacal of the
dynasty, crowned in 722, through his grandson Bahlum-Kuk II.
The Palenque GenBases are the basis for a video tutorial on linking GenBases.
o Speedups.
General speedup of program especially on Person View. The generation of the
bibliography and narrative sentences is now faster.
You can expect Narrative reports to be faster. The speedup is 2.5 times which
means a report which previously took 10 seconds now only takes 4 seconds.
Imports of GEDCOM files are now 10 times faster. So if an import used to take
30 minutes it will now only take 3 minutes. This puts GENP in the very fast
league.
o Timelines.
New timelines for American Presidents, Australian Prime Ministers, British
Prime Ministers, Canadian Prime Ministers, Palenque, State of Victoria Australia.
The New South Wales Australia timeline has double the entries. Now a total of 15
official timelines. Timelines are fully integrated into the system and appear
in views of person data as well as some reports.
o Kinship Report.
See at a glance how other people are related to you in your database.
You can vary the report such as to include a certain number of generations and
to include or exclude various people. In fact you can use it as an
ancestor report or descendant report.
Our advanced features take linking to a new level - include or exclude
GenBases, even order the report on the GenBase name. All with a few clicks of
the mouse. Substitute GenBase name abbreviations that you want to appear.
The routines have been devised so that translation to other langugages
reflects their pecularities. The Spanish translation is, we believe, the
best available.
Many users depend on this report for their day to day research.
You will be surprized how fast this report is.
o Statistical Charts.
We have 11 statistical charts. These vary from Age Pyramid, Names in History
to Places by Period. The source of the charts can be a GenBase, Group of
GenBases, List, Individual, Spouse or Both.
o Report of Potential Problems.
This report lists any potential problems in a GenBase. You can easily include
or exclude criteria.
o Report of Individual Timeline.
This report lists the events during the lifespan of the individual based on
the timelines you include. Easily choose which timelines to include using the
Timeline Selection dialog. There is an age indicator giving a graphical
display.
o Report of Timelines.
This report lists all events during a period based on the timelines you
include. Easily choose which timelines to include using the
Timeline Selection dialog. There is an age indicator giving a graphical
display.
o Relationship Report.
This report gives in written style the relationship between two people.
For example, a grandfather to grandson relationship reports on the
grandfather and father and son.
The report uses a Relationship Calculator to specify the two people.
Our advanced features allow you to follow linked people and allow or
disallow bridging GenBases. Even color code the links.
o Relationship Chart.
Like the Relationship Report it gives the relationship between two
people.
Additionally you can specify the box style for a pleasing chart.
For example, a grandfather to grandson relationship charts the
grandfather and father and son.
The report uses a Relationship Calculator to specify the two people.
Out advanced features allow you to follow linked people and allow or
disallow bridging GenBases. Even color code the links.
o Query Manager.
This manager allows you to query the data you have stored in your various
GenBases. You can query against one or a Group of GenBases.
There are 17 official queries provided. You can write your own queries
and base them on the official ones. You can vary the logical tests and
vary the fields that get displayed. The display then can be output to
various formats such as Excel and HTML. There is no need to learn
specialised computer science query languages as the Query Manager hides
all that complexity from you.
o List Manager.
Create and maintain lists of people. Easily add a focus person to a list.
People in lists are colour coded. Report on the list into Excel, Word or
other formats. Automatically add people to a list from a report. The people
in your list can be from any GenBase. Export to Gedcom the people in a list.
Jump to anyone anywhere from your list.
o Individual Copy.
Copy an individual or list to any GenBase. Filter the media that you want
to copy.
o 'Match Merge' Facility.
This facility enables you to match and then merge individuals together. It
even works across a Group of GenBases.
You can Find Matches by matching on an individual, the spouse, both, a List,
or a GenBase.
You then compare with a GenBase, a List, or a Group of GenBases.
You then specify the criteria for a match. For example - surname.
The Match List displays possible matches. You will then see the two
individuals on a Compare Individuals dialog.
The facility performs all the tiresome work of merging the individuals
for you.
o 'Find Duplicates' Facility.
The program works out the percentage match between everyone in a GenBase.
You choose the threshold above which matches will be displayed. You can
then choose to Compare individuals and see the Rationale for the match.
The Rationale may be "Surname spelling identical, Birth date within 4 years,
Death date within 6 years". You can then Merge the two individuals.
o New individual 'Check for Duplicates'.
When adding a new individual you can choose to Check for Duplicates. The
program searches the database to see if a similar individual is already
in the database. The criteria for the search can be changed in Preferences.
o Spell Checking.
Spell Checking including Live Spell Checking, a Thesaurus, and a Spelling
Options dialog. These features are available in the Text Editor which can
be used to edit text in: Media Manager, GenBase Description, GenBase
Copyright, Attribute memo fields, Source memo fields. As well as various
English dictionaries we provide French, German, Spanish and Latin
dictionaries.
o Most Recently Used GenBase.
A list of most recently used (MRU) GenBases is maintained. By clicking on
the name that GenBase is reopened with the focus person being the last
person you were working on before it was closed.
o Day Search.
This tool allows you to search for a week day across the years. This answers
the question - in which month and years was Sunday the first of the month?
In which years was Sunday the first of January?
You can expand the dialog to see the months calendar then move backwards or
forwards through the months. With a few clicks of the mouse you can
navigate forwards or backwards by 1, 10 or 100 years.
You can search on British or Roman calendars.
o Day of Week.
This tool allows you to see one months calendar at a time. You can move
backwards or forwards through the months.
Often you have an obituary mentioning a date, but no day of the week, how
do you work out the date of the funeral that was to be held on the Friday?
It is simple with this calculator. You can view British or Roman calendars.
o Roman Numerals.
This tool converts a year into Roman Numerals or Roman Numerals into a
year.
This answers the typical problem of transcribing a tombstone with a
date like MCMLXXXVI.
o Regnal Dates.
This tool is on the Day of Week calculator. As you move through the
months the British regnal year changes. It follows the complicated
regnal years right back to William I in 1067.
Suddenly those hard to read wills and marriage licenses become easier
to understand.
o Relationship Calculator.
This tool starts working whilst you have a person on your screen.
It uses that person to work out whom the relationship is from and the person
the relationship is to. Of course you can change the people in the calculator.
It supports GenBases that are linked and enables you to color code various
linked GenBases.
You can see the Relationship Path and discover if there is more than one
relationship. For example, when cousins marry.
o Conversions Tool.
Convert area, distance, fuel, mass, temperature, velocity and volume. For
distance alone there are 29 different types. For example, convert
meters to feet.
o Report settings.
You can now save report settings to a default file or any file you want.
For example, save the settings for the Kinship report displaying one panel
to a file 'Kinship_one_panel' and the settings for it displaying two panels
to 'Kinship_two_panels'. Then in Configuration Control simply select the
settings you want to reinstate.
o Place Manager.
Extra functionality rounds out this Manager. You can now use the Place Edit
dialog to shift fields within a row.
The Shift Columns dialog allows you to shift a whole column to another. This
is convenient if your GEDCOM import resulted in data being misplaced.
The Search and Replace dialog allows you to perform searches and replacement
of data in a whole column. You can use regular expressions in your search.
You can now display places from a Group of GenBases and run the Advisor.
o Place Editor.
There are now different validation tests when you exit the dialog. The
changes are to early and late date fields.
o History.
Stores and displays the people as you move around your database.
Click on a person to jump to them, regardless of the database they are in.
You can see the history list in the History dialog or in the main menu or
in the sidebar. Using Preferences you can tweak how the history list is
maintained, even changing how many items are kept.
It supports GenBases that are linked by showing a View Individual dialog so
you can, for example, choose to see the person on a new view.
o Bookmarks.
Stores and displays people that you want it to recall. This means you can be
selective in whom you store.
It has 10 fixed bookmarks that have their own keymaps, plus a variable number
of bookmarks.
Access the Bookmarks via its dialogs or keymaps. Also see the Bookmarks on the
sidebar or the main menu.
With a few key presses you can recall a stored bookmark.
o Keymaps.
Assign and remove shortcut keys. We have provided a default set for you.
This facility is designed to work with Bookmarks and History. For example,
pressing CTRL+0 you recall the first Bookmark.
Advanced features are to Load or Save keymaps. Keymaps are provided for GENP
and other family history programs.
o Jump to a linked GenBase.
When viewing the Pedigree View, with a right click you can jump to an
individual in another GenBase. This facility has to be seen to be
believed. Integrates with the View Individual dialog so you can, for example,
choose to see the person on a new view.
o Task Tracker.
We have added Configuration to this manager.
o Configuration Control.
When your mouse hovers over the thumbnail view you will see an enlarged
view of the resulting configuration. You can finish viewing the enlarged
view by swiping your mouse over the image, by keying ALT F4, by keying ESC,
or by keying ALT C.
When your mouse hovers over a Configuration button you are shown the comment
that was saved with the configuration. This will serve as a mnemonic of the
configuration.
o Name Selection.
This dialog can now be invoked from a menu. (You can of course place it on a
tool button.)
The icon will show if there is a focus GenBase. Provided you choose an
individual the focus will jump to that person.
We added some options to Preferences so that the ENTER key can have a
different function. It can either display the Name Manager as it does now
or accept the selection. The ESC key now exits the dialog.
o Name Manager.
There is now an interactive search. When the Name Manager appears you can
commence keying the first letter of a name and the program will search for
the name commencing that letter. Continue typing for a focused search.
o Program Startup.
Start the program with your preferred GenBase and individual.
The program takes the last GenBase you had open with an individual viewable.
Alternatively specify what GenBases and what individuals you want, with our
easy to use dialogs. Multiple databases are a snap.
o Send Feedback.
Facility to send us feedback on a bug, problem, suggested improvement or
requested feature.
o Check for Updates.
Connects to our website and lets you know if you have the most recent version
of the program or if there is a more recent version available.
o Database Location Substitution.
When you specify the location of a GenBase you can now use an identifier in
the path. For example, you many use the identifier "memstick" to specify
the path to your memory stick or USB drive. This feature makes it easy to
move the location of your GenBases.
o System Tables.

All the dialogs have been revamped.
o GenBase List.
This can now be filtered by GenBase.
You can choose to display any Genbase, specify the ones you want to display,
or specify the ones you don't want to display.
o Group List.
There is a new 'Group List' dialog. A double click selects the group.
o Theme List.
There is a new 'Theme List' dialog. Used in System Table Database, Gedcom
Import Wizard.
